- 1. Please introduce yourself.
- My name is Sailor or Éloi. I’m a 19 yo uni student and would rather not disclose anything else.
- 2. How long have you been making websites?
- I made my first site on Mozilla’s Thimble when I was 10(?). It was a Gravity Falls shrine, lol. I had been interested in making my own site since then, to showcase my art as a kid, but it never went anywhere from there. I got more serious about HTML/CSS when I was 14 & got my first Carrd Pro subscription.
- 3. And what got you into the hobby?
- ^ carr pro
- 4. What kind of website are you most interested in?
- Personal sites, OC portfolios, shrines, fanlistings, fandom spaces, etcetera.
- 5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?
- I spend a lot of time thinking up designs, then I draw them out on Procreate, on paper, or I make [very] rough drafts on Google Slides. I’ll put an example here.
- 6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.
- boypussy, magnapina, slimezone, hellmouth, Windchime, redstring, epic city, and Wizard's Wagon.
- 7. What's your favourite part about making websites?
- The creative process.
- 8. And the thing you struggle with the most?
- Also the creative process.
- 9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?
- iframe is convenient, but I like to branch off to explore different facets of myself. If I feel that I cannot design & create a whole page for something, I usually resort to sticking it in the mainframe.
- 10. How confident are you with CSS?
- Confident enough...
- 11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?
- I do, I'm using it right now.
- 12. What is your favourite HTML element?
- Probably <marquee>.
- 13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?
- Think of its purpose, so I know what to add... start outlining on paper... look for inspiration through other sites, images, and so on.
- 14. Do you know JavaScript?
- Yes, I’m actually JS certified.
- 15. How about PHP?
- Umm... Not confidently.
- 16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?
- Not really. I do go for certain ideas I want to portray on each one, but I am actually horrible at grasping the concept of themes & aesthetics. It’s not natural to me. I’m not an aesthetic person. If I ever make anything that is aesthetic, it’s because I have been abducted & replaced by aliens.
- 17. Are you more focused on content or design?
- Content comes first. I can’t think about design without it.
- 18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?
- No. I have been considering it, though.
- 19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?
- The best.
- 20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
- I plead the fifth.
- 21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?
- Great. They are a simple but creative way to say a lot about a person.
- 22. What do you think of button walls in particular?
- I’m building one as we speak.
- 23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?
- I want to have a personal homepage no matter what, so it’d inevitably be at least a bit similar. However, I am working on a Neocities for one of my OCs [as if said OC made it, in their perspective rather than mine]. I can see myself doing more of that.
- 24. Are you envious of other people's websites?
- Not really. I don’t see a point in that. Websites are meant to be personal. I know that what may encompass someone else won’t encompass me. If it’s knowledge you’re envious of, there’s always a place to start learning.
- 25. What text editor do you use?
- The built-in one on Neocities. Sometimes VS Code, but I use Code::Blocks for school, so I haven’t mastered it yet.
- 26. Why do you use that one?
- The unseen forces of the universe picked it out for me.
- 27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?
- imgbb, or on my own server.
- 28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?
- It is not too relevant to me. I think both are neat. I use Neocities since it was the first one I discovered.
- 29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?
- A mere 8 megabytes so far.
- 30. Do you keep local backups of your files?
- Of course...
- 31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?
- Both; I enjoy both. What matters to me is personality over performance.
- 32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?
- I use my favorite colors. I really like primary colors, but in very light tones. I don’t know if I’d theme my whole website around that, though. I’ve tried, and it was difficult to find fitting graphics.
- 33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?
- No. I take breaks for months at a time to pick up different things. I was fixated on Neocities April-May 2025, then video editing May-late August 2025, crafting/sewing September-late October 2025, now I’m back. Balancing this with art and editing, however.
- 34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?
- I am trying to get my Rêve into HTML/CSS. Other than that, I don’t.
- 35. Do people in your real life know about your website?
- Just my therapist.
- 36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?
- As often as I feel is necessary. I usually go in and out of activity sporadically.
- 37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?
- I do. I’m prone to mimicking others rather than experimenting, and I am trying to break that habit, hence the v2.0. I actually have another 4 index versions sitting in my VS Code however.
- 38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?
- All of the above. I feel that all three of these things speak for me about equally.
- 39. Do you do web design professionally?
- No, and I don’t think I ever could.
- 40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?
- No & no.
- 41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?
- I would like to. I prefer it to any other kind of communication, as I’m not good at casual conversations. [*Whispering*] [Email me...]
- 42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?
- I only use my website.
- 43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?
- I’d rather not answer.
- 44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?
- I do, most of the time. I actually don’t really think about the music I listen to while coding, though. Probably my usual playlists. I’ll assume that it ranges from Clan of Xymox to Devi McCallion.
- 45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?
- Like I said earlier, I have another [very underdeveloped] website for my wizard OC, but I am trying to build this one up first.
- 46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?
- Whatever topics are necessary. This is my form of social media, so I’ll dump anything on here that I’d like to publicize.
- 47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?
- We all obscure our true selves to an extent. Although I am a very private person, I think I’m quite candid on my site... That’s the whole point of it, anyways. I feel safe enough to do that on here, since I am anonymous.
- 48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?
- None yet, though I do keep up with every single follower, so I consider them all to at least be my acquaintances.
- 49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?
- Happy enough. You can always be better, or neater. I’ll get to that when I get to it.
- 50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?
- There are no rules to coding, do whatever you’d like as long as you’re not being harmful.
- 51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?
- Experiment. Worry less about uniformity. Add weird fonts. Make my eyes bleed.
- 52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?
- Guilty of generic structure. It’d be best to let it go, but whatever works for me is fine.
- 53. Do you consider different browsers?
- To an extent. I definitely will optimize my site in the future.
- 54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.
- I use Brave. I don’t know, use what you’d like.
- 55. And what OS are you on?
- I’d rather not answer.
- 56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?
- Brave is a strong browser, in my opinion. I’ve been using it since 2021, and I have few complaints.
- 57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?
- Not at all.
- 58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?
- Warnings are nice, but I do enjoy autoplay. It can really enhance a site.
- 59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?
- I love webrings. I need to join more, but I am holding off until I create a site button or some asset to help my site to be more memorable.
- 60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?
- I love web shrines. I am planning to make several, but none of them have been built yet. I like shrines that are very personal & also educational. Some of my favorite shrines come from Dezii.
- 61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?
- I don’t know and I don’t really care.
- 62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?
- My ideal website is one that is very colorful & expressive. The colors are not so much a visual thing, but rather about the person that the site reflects. I want to feel like I know you.
- 63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?
- I loved art growing up. I took AP art classes all throughout high school, but I experienced bad burnout due to forcing myself to draw for the grades. I’m a very bad perfectionist, so I fell out of the habit after high school. I’m trying to get back into it, so I’d say that I’m an amateur. I want to be confident enough to share my art one day.
- 64. What are your favourite resource sites?
- All linked in my graphics section. My favorite is Gifcities, if that counts.
- 65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?
- Refusing to use stylesheets... [cigarette emoji] [I look off into the distance]
- 66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?
- Ask for help, join communities, find inspiration, don’t get discouraged, and don’t compare your skills to the skills of others.
- 67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?
- I mostly hard-code as of right now.
- 68. What do you think of frameset layouts?
- Very convenient, but can become overplayed IMO.
- 69. How about table-based layouts?
- They’re popular for a reason. Clean, simple, easy to manage and navigate. Yet you can still embed lots of personality into them.
- 70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?
- I use two-column layouts, mostly. My favorite three column sites are Hellmouth and epic city.
- 71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?
- Probably the CSS, I’m very prone to making mistakes in HTML so I would rather leave it be unless necessary. Lol. I am getting better at it, though.
- 72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.
- Not fully, no. Maybe one day.
- 73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?
- That’s exactly where I usually start from.
- 74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?
- Somewhere in the middle. I could be advanced if I had stayed consistent with it since I discovered Neocities, but I will get there when I get there.
- 75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?
- It depends. Usually, I think of how I can recreate real things in code, specifically JS. Especially animated movies.
- 76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?
- Trial and error, w3schools, learning by the book. I’m a suuuucker for physical material when it comes to coding, but nothing published past 2013..
- 77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?
- Yes, it’s probably a habit since I was originally a Carrd aficionado Lol.
- 78. Thoughts on floating elements?
- They can be so tricky, but I want to get the hang of them.
- 79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?
- px first, then em... For positioning, though, usually %.
- 80. Do you have a favourite font?
- MS Gothic, DotGothic16, Comic Neue, Impact, anything basic is a go-to. I really loved using ‘Eater’ when I was 14. I think that says a lot about me. Your favorite built-in Carrd font stays with you forever.
- 81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?
- I’d like to run one with my Rêve, maybe as a sort of scrapbook, or something. It’d work by us both hunching over a computer and fighting over the keyboard.
- 82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?
- As often as I possibly can.
- 83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?
- I have a whole folder full of bookmarked sites. I’d honestly be beside myself with joy if someone bookmarked my site.
- 84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?
- I don’t know. If you are impressed by anything, that’ll make me happy enough.
- 85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?
- I am. I’m not too good with engineering or anything, but I like to collect old consoles and music players, especially. I’m also very interested in cybersecurity, and certified in the field as well.
- 86. How often and for how long are you online?
- I’m on my laptop for over 8 hours everyday, without a doubt. My phone? Maybe 2 hours a day.
- 87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?
- People of future civilizations, centuries ahead of us.
- 88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?
- I have been.
- 89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?
- I have. I’ve been taking compsci classes since they were first being offered to me.
- 90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?
- They’re beginner-friendly, but I have never used one. I’d rather do everything the hard way. I’m here for a long time, not a good time.
- 91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?
- I do NOT because the formatting kept breaking for me. I’ll try again soon, but I honestly don’t care about hits.
- 92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?
- Are you a cop?
- 93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?
- So you’re a cop. Well you caught me. I use Google Docs, okay? I back up everything onto Google Docs, or the sticky note app that comes with your computer. Are you happy?
- 94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?
- [I’m too busy running away].
- 95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?
- [You can see me in the distance, if you squint].
- 96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?
- Okay I’ll answer this one and that’ll be it. It honestly depends on how paranoid I get. Leaving everything without a word is kind of my thing.
- 97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?
- [...]
- 98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?
- [...]
- 99. And do you optimise the images on your website?
- [...]
- 100. We're out of time! How do you feel after answering 100 questions? ....other than exhausted.
- Thankful, if someone spent their time reading all of these. I’m going to make myself a hot chocolate now.
